Metropolitan Funeral Cover

Metropolitan Funeral Cover

Because life insurance companies move at a glacial pace, you’ll need funeral cover. Paying out within 48 hours of the death of the insured, funeral insurance covers the costs of the funeral arrangements. Metropolitan funeral cover provides policies which cater for the insured and his or her family.

Metropolitan cover pays out up to R30 000 for funeral expenses which includes payment for coffins, burial, headstones, flowers, catering and transport. The cover, though, is limited to premature and accidental death. That is, it does not pay out in the event of death by natural causes (or old age). Once the insured retires or reaches retirement age, the funeral cover falls away, usually with the life cover portion of a policy. Unlike life insurance, funeral cover does not require a medical exam as it pays out for accidental death.

Metropolitan funeral cover: member and life partner

A policy catering for single clients, Metropolitan member only funeral cover pays out for one individual. That is, if the policyholder dies, only his or her funeral is covered. Most funeral plans come with the option to include the costs of a spouse or dependents funeral too.

Metropolitan cover for life partner is available for insureds with a life partner and wish to include him or her on their policy. The principle is the same: the funeral cover pays out in the event of his or her death, an amount equal to that of the principal member.

Metropolitan funeral cover: member children and parents

Metropolitan cover also enables principal members to add their children and parents onto their policy. This pays out in the event of any nominated participant listed in the document, and, given the extra cover, is more expensive than member only and member life partner cover. (It is however cheaper than the extended family option.)

Parents and parents of the principal member’s spouse can be included on the policy too, if the parents have not yet reached the age of 85 years. A requisite for this policy is that the principal insured be a member of the Group Funeral Insurance Scheme (which can be taken out as a standalone policy).

Metropolitan funeral cover: family and extended family

Not only parents and parents-in-law but extended family can be added to Metropolitan’s cover. This policy allows the principle member to choose up to nine relatives to add to the cover, so long as the relatives are under the age of 85 years.
