Gottlieb Daimler and Wilhelm Maybach may have been beaten to the patent office by Karl Benz but they continued to design petrol-powered engines and instead founded Daimler-Motor-Gesellschaft DMG in 1890.

After Daimler’s death in 1900 Maybach invented the first racing car to use a 35-horsepower, four-cylinder engine which he named Mercedes. The car broke the speed record when it reached 64, 4 km an hour. Two years later DMG launched a model called Mercedes based on Mayback’s engine design.

In 1926 Benz and Daimler’s firms merged to form Daimler-Benz. That year the first cars bearing the Mercedes-Benz brand were produced.

German engineer Karl Benz invented the first petrol-powered car. His company, Benz & Cie, joined forces with Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft to form Mercedes Benz.
