In Detroit Ransom Eli Old founded Olds Motor Works and laid the foundations for the Detroit motorcar industry. In 1902 he became the first manufacturer to implement large-scale, production-line manufacturing; instead of building one car at a time by hand, several cars could now be placed on an assembly line and produced simultaneously.

But it was none other than Henry Ford who made cars affordable when he expanded on his idea by fitting his Ford Motor Company factory with moving assembly lines. Workers could now put a car together in 93 minutes and productivity increased eightfold.

Fifteen million Model T Fords were built between 1908 and 1927.

Other car manufacturers had no choice but to adopt assembly lines or risk closure. By 1930 the 250 companies that did not have an assembly line went bankrupt.
